Biography

Identity of parents: Two of the sons of Benjamin Stevens and Dorothy Olmsted did not have children. The distribution of the estates of those two sons establish Rebecca Stevens wife of Abraham Avery as a member of this family.

Epaphras Stevens did not marry, and distribution of his estate was made to his brothers and sisters on 25 September 1778: Benjamin Stevens, George Stevens, Alice wife of Matthew Miller, Rebekah wife of Abraham Avery, Isaac Stevens, William Stevens, and Dorothy Stevens.[1] Son Benjamin Stevens (son of Benjamin Stevens and Dorothy Olmsted) did not marry, and his estate was administered by William Stevens of Glastonbury and Isaac Stevens of Weathersfield with bond made 12 March 1788. The distribution of the estate included heirs-at-law William Stevens, George Stevens, Isaac Stevens, Alice Miller wife of Matthew Miller, Rebecah Avery wife of Abraham Avery, and Dorothy Stevens.[2]

Abraham Avery was a tanner and saddler. The family lived in Montville, Bolton, and Glastonbury, Connecticut.[3] Rebecca Stevens and Abraham Avery were parents of nine children.

ii ASHBEL STEVENS AVERY, b. at Montville, 8 May 1775; d. at Shoreham, VT, 29 Mar 1829; m. at Becket, MA, 12 Aug 1800, EUNICE ALLEN, b. 1776 whose parents are not identified;[5] Eunice d. at Spring Arbor, MI, 17 Oct 1854. Eunice was living with her daughter Sarah and her husband David Chapel at Spring Arbor in 1850.[6]

iii NATHAN AVERY, b. at Montville, 23 Jan 1777; d. at Hudson, NY, 30 Dec 1834; m. at Glastonbury, 1803, his first cousin, SARAH MILLER, b. at Glastonbury, 22 Aug 1775 daughter of Matthew and Alice (Stevens) Miller;[7] Sarah d. at Pennfield, MI, 6 Jan 1851. Sarah was living in Pennfield in 1850 with her daughter Sarah Maria Avery with her.[8]

v ABRAHAM AVERY, b. at Montville, 22 Jun 1782; d. at Wilbraham, MA, 8 Oct 1853; m. 1st at Wilbraham, 20 Oct 1808, ELIZABETH BLISS, b. at Wilbraham, 29 Jan 1788 daughter of Abel and Elizabeth (Bartlett) Bliss; Elizabeth d. at Wilbraham, 27 Dec 1851. Abraham m. 2nd at Wilbraham, 6 May 1852, CORDELIA BELINDA BREWER, b. at Wilbraham, 5 Aug 1805 daughter of William and Jemima (Bliss) Brewer; Cordelia d. at Wilbraham, 15 Nov 1877.
