Biography

John was born about 1803 on Prince Edward Island. He was the son of Angus Stewart and Unknown (McEachern) Stewart.

He was possibly the John Stewart in Lot 8 in 1861, head of a household of 5, all single and all Roman Catholic. There was a man aged 21-45, and a man over 60. Neither is a great fit for John, if he was born in 1803. The two next farms were under Malcolm and Donald Stewart. The John Stewart in Lot 8 could also have been a widower.

John died before 1881 in West Point, PEI, Canada.

According to Leland Currie, John and Elizabeth's son John married Mary Griffin from Lot 7. The son John died before 1881. [1]

Research Notes

A John S* of an approximate age was not in Prince County in 1881. It's possible he was the John Stewart, age 47 (should be 97?) in the household of Angus Stewart, Lot 8. Since relationships are not given in the 1881 census, it's also possible he was age 47 and Angus' brother, not father. Not married or a widower. Both Angus and John were Catholic.

If John had a son John, it's possible he died sometime after the 1861 census, and his son died in 1884.

Note that there were no settlers in Lots 7 or 8 in the 1798 Census of Prince Edward Island. John may have been born on the Island, but less likely in Lot 8. No Stewart on the list of settlers in Lot 7 made by the landlord Montgomery's agent in 1833. "Montgomery's Lands 1833, Land Records and Genealogy" by James P Lawson, the Island Magazine, #32, Fall/Winter 1992 pg 33. The agent noted that some tenants had settled in Lot 8 in error.

Not in the 1870 Commissioner of Public Land's Report.

The Lovell's Prince Edward Island Directory 1871 T-Z - Stewarts in West Point were Alexander, Malcolm, Angus and Donald.
