Sarah was born on the 24th March 1868 at 59 Amberley Road, Paddington, Middlesex, England.^[1][2] She was the 6th of eight children and eldest daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Stone.

She was baptised on the 10th May 1868 at Holy Trinity, Paddington^[3]

Sarah can be seen in the 1871 England Census^[4] at the age of three, with her parents and four of her siblings. They were living at 87 Chippenham Mews. Paddington.

In the 1881 England Census,^[5] Sarah can be seen at the age of thirteen, with her parents and three of her siblings. They were living at 17 B[yron] Street. Chelsea.

Sarah married Peter John Byrnes on the 8th June 1884 at St. Luke, West Kilburn, Middelsex.^{[6] [7][8]} On the certificate she is stated as being eighteen years old but is in fact only sixteen. She maintains this two year difference in her age for the rest of her life.
