Biography

Mary was born on 16 Feb 1835[1] in Madison County, Ohio. She was the third child and first daughter born to Algernon Stone and Eve Slyh.

Mary's father Algernon had arrived in Madison County in the 1810s with his parents and siblings from Vermont. The Stones were an old New England family that arrived in Connecticut Colony in the 1630s or 1640s.

Sometime in the late 1840s, Mary moved with her parents and siblings 500 miles west to Appanoose County, Iowa. There, in 1850, she lived on a farm with her parents, siblings, grandfather Samuel Stone and uncle Lampson Stone.

Mary never married and may have had a learning disability. Her condition is recorded as "idiotic" in the 1860 U.S. federal census. She lives in Johns Township in Appanoose County with her parent in 1860.[2]

She died on 21 Oct 1864 in Appanoose County at the age of 29.
