Biography

As per Ruth's personal journal... Ruth was born in Dayton, Ohio on May 22, 1927 to Willis Stoner and Lenah. Unfortunately she lost her mother not long after she was born. Her childhood was rough because she grew up poor (she was always getting the hand me down clothes which were so faded by the time she got them) and she felt unloved/unworthy of being part of her family. Her dad would make Ruth and her sisters make fake flowers during the week to sell on Saturdays to raise money for paying the taxes on the rental properties. Her older sisters didn't know what to make of Ruth for coming home and losing their mother.

However, Winifred loved Ruth through sharing her music talent with her. Ruth was heart-brokened when Winifred died young. The only joy that Ruth found in her childhood was the time she spent with her grandma when her dad and stepmom went off to Florida for 3 to 4 months to get away from the winter cold and Ruth could get roller skates and put on shows for the local schools and raise money for charities through their skating skills. Unfortunately, every time her dad and stepmom came back home, they'd sell the skates off and Ruth would have to do without skating until the next time they went back to Florida.

Ruth was a cheerleader at her school. Her first job was at McCory's Dollar Store at the age of 14. She met a boy and he got permission from her father to date her. They dated until she was about 16 and after that, their relationship seems to have fallen apart because he ended up taking a different girl to a work occasion dance (after her father told Ruth "no she couldn't go") and then he joined up the Navy and lost contact with her. Ruth eventually ended up buying her first car, a Ford for $350 and fixed it up really nice with new paint job and stuff. Unfortunately her stepmom objected to the idea and took it back to the man Ruth got the car from and demanded the money back.

Ruth eventually met another boy named Ralph. She had not heard from her 1st love so she eventually made plans to get eloped to Ralph in Maysville, Kentucky on Oct. 27th. After this point, she heard from her first love asking if she wanted an engagement ring or if he should wait til he comes home on leave to buy her one. Bummer... Ralph spent a few years in Germany fighting in World War II. When he came back home, he was never the same again- flashbacks and addicted to drinking alcohol affected Ruth's life and marriage with him.

Ruth eventually got pregnant with her first child. That baby (Beverly) was born on Jan. 9th, 1942 and her husband had gotten a $900 loan supposedly for the furniture and the hospital bill they would have to pay for but he spent it all on his drinking. By this point, Ruth was fed up with all the problems her husband had and wanted a divorce so eventually she did file for one. Ruth worked several jobs to make ends meet after having her baby and had to keep the bills paid without any help from her husband who was always off doing whatever.

One day she meets a man named Doc playing cards with friends in Florida. Beverly took to him and he was so kind to Ruth and Beverly. He then went back home to Indiana and when push came to shove, her stepmother made her leave Florida to try to find a job in Ohio. She didn't have any luck with finding a place to stay so she went to Indiana to look up Cloice. After marrying Cloice, it took about 4 years before she tried for any children. That was when she had twins daughters, two boys, and another daughter. They all lived on a nice piece of property that Cloice's dad bought for them after they had married in French Lick in the country and raised several animals.

She spent a lot of time raising the children on her own without much family support (occasionally she did get some support from her sister or her dad in the mail but not a lot). Eventually the house they built on the property got a few rooms and a floor added on to accomodate the growing family. The basement leaked water every time there was heavy rain. They put in a pond in the backyard and Ruth taught her children about the dangers of going in the pond without any supervision. (The house is no longer there today - the bank foreclosed on the house and property to cover the expenses from Cloice's business and bulldozed the house down due to water in the basement)

Throughout her life, she was very strong in her faith and tried to live by God's word the best of her abilities. She suffered a lot of hardships and rarely complained about it all. She was a very peaceful person. She also learned to be a hardworking person from her family. She passed away in Sept. 2005. [1]
