Research Notes

  • Harston manor: Tiptofts was claimed, the entail having expired, by Sir Payn Tiptoft's heirs general, decended from the three daughters and coheirs of his elder half-brother, Robert, Lord Tiptoft (d. 1372). After long litigation they recovered it from Stanley and his wife in 1493. Those coheirs and their successors occupied it as coparceners until after 1600, jointly holding a single manor court, but dividing the estate's profits. The successful claimants in 1493 were John Scrope, 5th Lord Scrope of Bolton (d. 1498), greatgrandson of Robert Tiptoft's eldest daughter Margaret; Sir John Scrope of Castle Combe (Wilts.), grandson of her sister Millicent...[2]
  • 1467 Declaration of the will of Stephen Scrope esquire, that whereas for 200l. to him paid he has granted to John Neuburgh the elder esquire the wardship and marriage of John Scrope his son and heir apparent, and has delivered the said heir to him, and whereas the said Stephen and Roger Doket clerk, who is enfeoffed to his use in the manor and advowson of Castelcombe...[3]
  • 1486: IPM. EDWARD, son and heir of JOHN, late EARL OF WORCESTER. Writ de Devenerunt 20 Nov., inq. Friday after St. Julian the Bishop, 1 Hen. VII. By fine in the quinzaine of Easter, 39 Edw. III, between John Tybetot, knt., and Elizabeth his wife, querents, and Clement de Brethenham, Andrew de Wauton and Philip Chaumberleyn, deforciants, the said Clement gave the under-mentioned manor of Braunford, which Ralph Spigurnell then held for life, of the inheritance of the said Clement, to the said John and Elizabeth, and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John. It descended accordingly to the said Edward, as son of John, son of Pain, son of the said John Tybetot, knt., and Elizabeth his wife. And whereas no issue male is now remaining of the said John and Elizabeth, the said manor ought to descend to John Scrope, knt., Lord le Scrope, John Scrope, esq., and Henry Wentworth, knt., viz. to John, Lord le Scrope, as son of Henry, son of Richard, son of Margaret, one of the daughters and heirs of Robert Tybetot, knt., son and heir of the said John Tybetot, knt.; to John Scrope, esq., as son of Stephen, son of Millicent, another such daughter and heir; and to Henry Wentworth, knt., as son of Philip, son of Margery, daughter of Elizabeth, the third of such daughters and heirs.

The said Edward died under age and without issue 12 Aug. last, seised of the under-mentioned third of the manor of Leyham in fee. His cousins and heirs are his father’s sisters Philippa, Lady de Ros, aged 62 and more, and Lady Joan Inglesthorp, aged 60 and more; and Edward Ducldeley, aged 26 and more, son and heir of Joyce, another such sister.[4]
