Biography

William H. Strutton, son of Joseph Strutton and Christiana Unknown, was born January 1831 in Burke County, North Carolina. He passed away in July 1912 in Rockingham County, North Carolina and is buried in Strutton Family Cemetery, Rockingham County.

William may have been married three times. He married Frances (Rhodes) Evans in 1865, then Mary Ann Kelly in 1886. He states on his marriage license with Mary Ann Kelly that this was his third marriage. The 1910 census also states he has been married three times. I have failed to find a first wife or children that would have been from that marriage.

William left home before 1850; he is on the 1840 census with his parents but not 1850. If he was married before he married Frances Rhodes, it would be during this time.

On 10 October 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army South Division, Co. D, 12th Kentucky Volunteers at Clinton County, Kentucky. He was discharged 31 Dec 1863 at Strawberry Plains, TN, then re-enlisted in the same company 1 Jan 1864 and was discharged at Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, 11 July 1865. He declared he was a farmer before and after his military service.^[1]

After the war he settled in Leaksville, Rockingham County, North Carolina. On 22 Mar 1873 William and Frances Strutton of Patrick County, Virginia sold 5 acres of land inherited from Eppie Rhodes (Frances' father) to John Craddock (Frances' brother-in-law) for $60.00.

In 1901 William applied for a pension based on his Civil War service. He updated the application in 1910 and received approval for $20 a month, since he stated he was at least 82 years old. (Pension rates were $12.70/mo at 62 years; $15.75/mo at 70 years; $20/mo over 75.)

There has been disagreement as to William's birth year. On his pension applications dated 6 June 1901 and 11 January 1910 his birth date is 31 January 1827. His gravestone in the Strutton Family Cemetery, Leaksville, Rockingham County shows 1829. However, the 1830 census for his parents lists no children as of 1 June 1830. The 1840 census lists him as age 5-9. If William was born in January, it must have been January 1831.
