Biography

Mary was born about 1804 probably in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. She was the daughter of William Strutton and Elizabeth Moxley. Her date of death is unknown, but she is last found in records in the 1860 census in Putnam County, Indiana.

In 1829 Elizabeth Strutton, wife of Turner, and Mary Strutton her sister and wife of Turner's brother, Willis Lawson, sold land they had inherited from William Moxley their maternal grandfather. They sold 70 acres for $50 to Joseph Alsop. Turner and Elizabeth (Betsy) are said to be of Caroline County, Virginia and Willis and Mary are of Spencer County, Kentucky.^[1]

In 1830 a William Lawson was living with his family in Spencer County, Kentucky. It is not certain this is Willis, but he is the right age and in the right place at the time.^[2] In his household are:

• 2 males age 20-29
• 1 male age 30-39 [Willis]
• 1 female under age 5
• 2 females age 5-9
• 1 female age 10-14
• 1 female age 20-29 [Mary]

By 1840 the family appears to have moved on to Warren, Putnam County, Indiana.^[3]

The 1850 census has not yet been located but in 1860 Mary is living in Washington Township, Putnam County, Indiana with her daughters Sarah, Nancy and Amanda. She is apparently a widow. She is said to be age 56, born about 1804 in Virginia.^[4]
