Lieutenant Philip Stuart served with 3rd Continental Light Dragoons, Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Philip Stuart is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A109603.

Lieutenant Philip Stewart, sometimes affectionately referred to as "General" (traditional and probably exaggerated.) Philip served as a Lieutenant in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, as a member of the Third Continental Dragoons. He was wounded at the Battle of Eutaw Springs in 1782. He remained in the military and was an officer of Maryland troops in the War of 1812

On February 26, 1787, In Prince George's County, Maryland, Philip married Mary Marshall, daughter of Thomas Hanson Marshall and Rebecca (Dent) Marshall. Mary died two years later, on May 8, 1789, without having any children of record.

On December 15, 1792, Philip married Mary Fell Bayne, daughter of John Bayne and Mary (Edelen) Bayne. Children of Philip and Mary include:

  • Dr. Charles Baynes Stuart, b. 21 Oct 1795, Fairfax County, Virginia
  • Margaret Frances Adelaide Stuart, b. 25 May 1800, Fairfax County, Virginia, married Stuart Gibbons Thornton, in 1817, d. Aug 1849, Lawnville, Prince William County, Virginia (Age 49 years)

On November 27, 1813 a Phillip 'Stewart' purchased a part of Woodberry's Harbour (176 acres) from Richard Lanham and his wife Julia Hamilton and her siblings, Delilah Hamilton and Hecatissa Wade[1]. Phillip apparently was an inspiration to Richard's brother, George who named a son, Phillip Stewart Lanham in official documents and 'Stuart' in family notes and files.

Stuart was elected as a Federalist, representing the State of Maryland, to the Twelfth and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving from March 4, 1811 to March 3, 1819.

Born February 22, 1760 near Fredericksburg, Virginia, he died in Washington, District of Columbia, on August 14, 1830, and is interred in the Congressional Cemetery. there.
