One of 12 Children born to John Sturgeon. 1756-1830 & Susannah Beard 1766-1828
John Sturgeon was the son of John Sturgeon who first patented land in Harrison County, Indiana in June 1814. Crawford was formed from part of Harrison, Orange & Perry counties in 1818.[1] John Sturgeon "of Harrison County" patented land in April 1818 that had fallen into Crawford County Section 4, being the NE¼ of that section.[2] This last patent was likely the subject of this profile.
John was first married 4th November 1817 in Harrison County to Nancy Followell. It makes sense he would be seeking a home place of his own to begin his family. His household was enumerated as John "Stergan" in Crawford County during the U.S. Federal Census of 1820 with his wife and one son under 5 years.[3] His households of 1830 and 1840 remain consistent with other records of his family.[4]
It appears John was twice married. His widow when he died was named Malinda. John Sturgeon was recorded marrying to Malinda Anderson in Crawford County on 23rd November 1827. He was last enumerated during the U.S. Census of 1840 as John Sturgeon, Sr., between the age of 40 and 50 years, with son John Sturgeon, Jr. residing beside him.[5] He died in Crawford County prior to 27th November 1847, when his widow relinquished her right to administer over the estate of her deceased husband in favor of Jeremiah Lynch, John's apparent step-brother. In this 1847 record, John was called John Sturgeon, Sr., insuring us he was the elder of this particular Sturgeon family of Crawford County.
The administration records of John's estate names and clarifies all of his heirs where at the time residents in Crawford County. There were issues with Lynch's administration, such as not paying taxes on property and goods not sold or wasted, which led to Lynch declaring the estate insolvent and petitioning the Court to sell the land of which John Sturgeon had died possessed. From the counter-suit filed by the heirs of John Sturgeon to stop the sale, in which they were victorious, his heirs are fairly-well defined as two "sets" and appear to have been named in birth order, to include:
John's widow Malinda appears to have been enumerated in Crawford County from 1850 thru 1880. Her 1850 household included all of the younger children named in the suits between Jeremiah Lynch and the heirs of John Sturgeon. She is estimated to have passed away about 1885. She was named Malinda Anderson with John Sturgeon on the 1915 Indiana Certificate of Death of their daughter Elizabeth Thompson.
Married..4 November 1817 to Nancy Falwell..
