Biography

Joseph was born in 1850^[1]. He was the son of Nathaniel Suckling and Nancy Wright. He came to NZ aboard the Zealandia in 1870, together with his parents, brothers Walter & William, and sisters Annie & Emily ^[2] He married Emma Eliza Ann Emmett in 1883 ^[3]

He passed away in New Zealand in 1936.^[4]

MR JOSEPH SUCKLING An old and respected resident of Christchurch, Mr Joseph Suckling, of Worcester street, Linwood, died recently in his eighty-seventh year. Born in London in 1850, he came with his parents in the sailing shin Zealandia to New Zealand in 1870, and had lived in Christchurch ever since. In London he was associated with his father, Mr Nathaniel Suckling, in the leather business, and on coming to New Zealand he remained in that trade until the time of his retirement. Since his boyhood he had been associated with the Plymouth Brethren, and up to the time of his- death he was one of their devoted followers. In 1882 he married the daughter of Mr Henry Emmett. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs D. Mackie, of Templeton, and two sons, Mr J. H. Suckling, of Christchurch, and Mr W. E. Suckling, of Edendale. Many relatives and friends gathered at the Bromley Cemetery for the funeral. The services at the graveside, were conducted by Mr Suckling’s nearest friend, Mr J. Sargent. ^[5]
