Biography

H. J, "Jack" Suckling was born in 1876. He was the son of Nathaniel Suckling and Maria Mills. ^[1] He married Myra Alice West in 1902 ^[2] He passed away in 1934 age 58 ^[3]

FATAL COLLISION CYCLIST DIES OF HEAD INJURIES Mr Jack Suckling, a well-known cycle manufacturer in Christchurch, received severe head injuries when a bicycle he was riding collided with a motor-car at the corner of Armagh and Barbadoes streets yesterday, and he died a little more than half an hour later in the Public Hospital. The accident occurred at 1 p.m., when Mr Suckling was riding to his home for lunch, and he was admitted to the hospital suffering from severe head injuries and concussion. He died at 1.40 p.m. Mr Suckling was a married man, aged 57, and lived at 530 Barbadoes street. He was born in Christchurch and was the son of Mr Nathaniel Suckling. He was educated at the Riccarton and Burwood schools and entered the cycle manufacturing business at an early age. He was employed by several city firms, and established his own business about 30 years ago. Although he did not race he took a keen interest ill cycling and at times held positions on cycling and motor-cycling committees. Among the cyclists who rode for him was the champion, Phil O'Shea.^[4]
