Biography

  • Henry Frederick Suckow was born on February 15th 1873 in Clarence, Erie, New York to Frederick Suckow and Eliza M. Doll, two German immigrants. Henry was the second of four children born to Frederick and Eliza, 1 boy and 3 girls, Clara (1869), Henry (1873), Charlotte "Lottie" (1875), and Ella (1882).
  • In the 1875 New York, State Census [1] [2] [3] we find Frederick (32), Eliza (27), and their children Clara (6) and Henry (2) living in Clarence, Erie, New York where Frederick is a farmer.
  • Henry's sister Charlotte "Lottie" was born on April 5th 1875 in Clarence, Erie, New York [4]
  • In the 1880 United States Federal Census [5] [6] [7] we find Frederick, Eliza and the children Clara (11), Henry (7), and Lottie (5) Living in Clarence, Erie, New York where Frederick is a farmer.
  • Harry's sister Ella was born on September 1st 1882 in Lancaster, Erie, New York [8]
  • Henry's father, Frederick Suckow died on October 21st 1891 in Lancaster, Bowmansville, Erie, New York [9] where he was laid to rest in the Transit Rural Cemetery where his wife would join him in 1895.
  • In the 1892 New York, State Census, [10] [11] we find Henry (20), and his sisters Clara (23), Lottie (17), and Ella (10) living with their mother, Eliza (43) and Eliza's mother, Margaret Doll (72) in Lancaster, Erie, New York. Eliza works as a salon keeper and Henry as a bartender.
  • Henry's mother Eliza M. Doll died on June 12th 1895 in Bowmansville, Erie, New York where she was laid to rest with husband Fred in the Transit Rural Cemetery [12] [13].
  • Henry Suckow and Rose Pope were married in Bowmansville or Williamsville, Erie, New York on October 20th 1896. The headline in the Buffalo Enquirer says Bowmansville and the headline in the Buffalo Morning Express says Williamsville. The articles agree the wedding was in the Catholic rectory performed by Rev. Father Phillips with Rose's brother Michael as best man [14] [15] [16] [17].

Also in the household is Henry's sister Lottie (24) and his paternal grandmother Rickey (Frederica) (85). They live in Lancaster, Erie, New York where Henry is shown working as a hotel keeper and Lottie is a servant.
  • Henry and Rose's daughter Dorothy died on March 28th 1904 in Bowmansville, Erie, New York of diphtheria [23] [24]
  • Henry and Rose's third child, daughter Elinor was born on February 26th 1905 in Bowmansville, Erie, New York [25]
  • In the 1905 New York, State Census [26] [27] we find Henry, Rose, Arthur (7) and Elinor (1) living in Lancaster, Erie, New York where Henry is shown working as a day laborer.
  • Henry and Rose's last child, their son Frederick was born on March 1st 1908 in Bowmansville, Erie, New York [28]
  • In the 1910 United States Federal Census [29] [30] [31] Henry's household is composed of Henry (37), Rose (32), children Arthur (12), Eleanor (5) and Frederick (2) plus Olive Seran (14) who is Henry's niece and Mich Pope (77), Rose's father. They live on Genesee Road in Lancaster, Erie, New York where the only employed person in the household is Henry, a hotel proprietor. The census shows Henry owns his residence free of mortgage.
  • In the 1915 New York, State Census [32] [33] Henry and Rose have a full house. They live on Genesee Road in Lancaster, Erie, New York. In addition to their children Arthur (17), Elinor (10) and Frederick (7) the household includes two boarders Charles Pope (26 - Rose's brother) and Harry McGraw (29) and two female servants (their nieces) Clara (16) and Olive (18) Serace. Henry is shown as a hotel proprietor.
  • In the 1920 United States Federal Census [34] [35] [36] Henry and Rose still live on Genesee Road in Lancaster, Erie, New York with sons Arthur and Frederick and daughter Elinor and in addition, Rose's brother Charles Pope and their 2 nieces Olive and Clara Serace. Henry is shown as a hotel keeper, Arthur works in steel apparently handling chemicals, Charles is a laborer/operator of some type, and Olive works in a shop.
  • In the 1925 New York, State Census [37] [38] the Suckow household consists of Henry (52), Rose (47), Elinor (20) , Frederick (17) and Rose's brother Charles (36). They are living on Genesee Road in Lancaster, Erie, New York where Henry is a hotel keeper and Charles is an electric crane operator.
  • Henry's sister Lottie died on April 5th 1929 in Lancaster, Erie, New York and was laid to rest in the Transit Rural Cemetery in Bowmansville, Erie, New York [39] [40].
  • In the 1930 United States Federal Census [41] [42] Henry and Rose are living on Genesee Road in Lancaster, Erie, New York in a home valued at $10,000.00 which they own. Henry is shown as a self-employed cafe owner.
  • When asked in the 1940 United States Federal Census where they had lived in 1935 they said they were in the same place as shown in the 1940 United States Federal Census [43] [44]
  • In the 1940 United States Federal Census [45] [46] [47] [48] Henry and Rose are living on Genesee Road in Lancaster, Erie, New York in a home in this census valued at $2,500.00 which they own. Henry is shown as a self-employed restaurant proprietor.
  • Henry Frederick Suckow died on January 18th 1945 in Lancaster, Erie, New York with his wife Rose at a railroad crossing when their car was struck by a passenger train [49] [50]
  • Henry and Rose were buried in the Transit Rural Cemetery on Genesee Street in Bowmansville, Erie, New York [51] [52] [53]
