Biography

John was born about 1742. He is the son of John Sullivan III and Catherine Bright. He married Edith before 1769. They had one child, Jarrel.

Notes

In the deed listed in the sources, his wife Edith signs away her dower rights. He and his brother, James and sister-in-law, Susannah Sullivant, wife of Manoah, are selling part of the property he inherited from his father John III.

Sources

Image of Summons states the names of John Sullivant's children: Polly, Jarral, Henry, Peggy, Amelia, Woodson, Betsy and James Sullivant from 6 October 1798 http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/full_case_detail.asp?CFN=037-1803-006#img

Library of Virginia, Chancery Court Records, Charlotte County, No. 1803-006 John Sullivant died inestate in 1796 His administrator was Robert Gilliam His children were: Jerrald [or Jerrel?], Henry, Polly, Peggy, Amelia (Amy), Woodson, Betsy (possibly Elizabeth), James. Jerrald, Henry, and Polly were over age 21 at the time of this case (about 1798). The other children were under the age of 21 at this time. "that the said Jerrald who has removed out of this Commonwealth and Henry who enlisted in the Army of the United States about six years before the institution of this suit and has not since returned are besides your Oratrix [i.e. Polly Sullivant] the only children of the said John Sullivan deceased who have arrived at the age of twenty one years" Henry and Jarrald do not live in Charlotte County and never replied to the complaint. http://www.virginiamemory.com/collections/chancery/

[NOTE: according to case # 1799-012, Jerrold Sullivant left Virginia about 1796 because of debts (unpaid) -- he apparently sold his interest in his father's estate to the guardian of his siblings, but had previous debts which obtained judgements and were paid out of the estate first.]

Assuming the children were listed in order of age (the usual method), that there were no deaths (I think there might have been because of the phrase "The children of John Sullivant at the time of his death were") and that Polly had recently turned 21 in in 1798: Jerrald b abt 1773 Henry b abt 1775 Polly b abt 1777 Peggy b abt 1779 Amelia b abt 1781 Woodson b abt 1783 Betsy b abt 1785 James b abt 1787

Charlotte County, Virginia, Chancery Court Records, Index Number 1799-012, Plaintiff: John McCargo; Defendants: John Petty, etc, Executors of John Sullivant etc http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/case_detail.asp?CFN=037-1799-012 Summary: John McCargo purchased Jarrold Sullivant's share of his father's estate, but some other men put in for money from the estate for debts Jarrold Sullivant owed them. John McCargo thinks he should be paid first. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/collaborate/KCVY-CR7
