Biography

Also known as William B.C. Sutherland

William Henry Sutherland was born to Jehan Sutherland At Withington Workhouse, Chorlton Union on the 14 January 1877^[1] While there is no father listed, at the time, there is a 34 year old married iron moulder named William Henry Sutherland living in Manchester with his wife and young family and when that family has a son, he will also be called William Henry.^[2]

The 1891 census shows that William (age 14) is a tailor living at Gerry's Square in a unit with 2 windows with his mother Johan and his siblings: Maggie (age 11); Barbara (age 7); John G. (age 1) and Isabella J. (2 months).^[3]

On his marriage record with his first wife and very pregnant Jane Anne Lyall on the 27 August 1896 he is listed as a journeyman tailor. He lists his parents as William Sutherland a seaman with the merchant service who was deceased at the time of his marriage and Johan Sutherland nee Stewart. These statement legitimizes his illegitimate birth without a recorded father as noted in the workhouse records. At this time of his first marriage, he is resides at Rose Street, Puckneytown, District of Wick.^[4]

John was born just a few days after his parents were married arriving on September 1st, 1896.^[5]

1911 Census ^[6]- the family of 9 is living at 21 Brabster Street, Thurso - William Sutherland age 33 a butcher/employer born in England - Jane Ann Sutherland age 32 wife born in Wick, Caithness - Margaret Sutherland age 12 daughter born in Halkirk - William Sutherland age 7 son born in Thurso - Catherine Sutherland age 7 daughter born in Thurso - Barbara Sutherland age 5 daughter born in Thurso - Elspeth Thane Sutherland age 4 daughter born in Thurso - Isobel Sutherland 1 daughter born in Thuso - Adeline Mackenzie a niece age 17 born in Wick, Caithness

They had one more son Alexander M L Sutherland who was born in 1911 with William Henry listed as a (tailor) master. Alexander tragically drowned at the age 20.
