DEATH OF MR. MARK B. SUTTON SR.

There passed away on Wednesday last, at the residence of his son (Mr. Mark B. Sutton jr., "Woodale," Cootamundra), one of the old sturdy pioneers of the Batlow and Tumut districts from the very early days, in the person of Mr. Mark Benham Sutton sr., at the ripe age of 84 years. Born at Rumford, Essex, England, he sailed in the ship John Rennie for Australia on 16th February, 1872, arriving at Port Denison, Queensland, on November 4 of the same year. When in Queensland he devoted much of his time as a manager of sawmills at Port Mackay. Thence he came south, being attracted by the gold discoveries, and reached Reedy Flat diggings (now Batlow) where he joined partners with his late brother William and the late Walter Workman, alluvial mining on the Gilmore Creek, where the latter was killed, but the two brothers remained in partnership for many years after. When the gold gave out, the subject of our obituary removed to Tumut, where, as near as can be gauged by the memory of old hands, he resided for 45 years. Some ten months ago, becoming enfeebled by old age and incapacitated for the lonely battle of life on his own account, he went to live with his son Mark at Cootamundra, under whose roof and personal protection he stayed till his death from senile decay. His wife predeceased him by two years and five months at Goulburn, her maiden name being Sophia Wright. The remains of her husband, as with hers upon her death, were brought to Tumut per train by their considerate sons, for interment in the Church of England portion of the new cemetery on Wednesday. Mr. H. W. Baker conveyed them in his hearse to All Saints' Church, where a short service was conducted by Rev. T. A. Gair, the Rector, and afterwards the cortege moved to the place of sepulchre. The six sons, whose special desire was to see their parents laid side by side when life was o'er, in the place where nearly half a century had been spent, were the pall-bearers and the Rector officiated at the grave. The surviving are daughters and sons Mrs. J. Harrison (Burwood), Mrs. Meades (Haber-field), Mrs. G. W. Bruce (Harden), Mrs. C. H. Mudear (Redfern), Mrs. Walter Sutton (Tumut), Mrs. A. A. Gregory (Temora), Miss Ada (Te- mora), Mark Denham (Coota.), William (Tumut), James (Tumut), Thos. H. (Wagga), Fred. (Tumut), Chas. (Temora) and one daughter predeceased him. His brother died at his own son William's residence at Gilmore on Feb. 7, 1922, aged 91 years.^[1]
