William was baptised June 9, 1833 in Musbury, Devon, England. He is the son of William Swain and Ann Collings. His father was a tanner at the time.[1]
He married Elizabeth Pavey on March 21, 1865 and it was registered in the 1st Quarter Exeter registration district, Devon.[2][3]
