..."They arrived in Egypt and were stationed near the river Nile. They suffered greatly from the heat, and had to move frequently because of the epidemic of disease which followed them. A number of them died and many were sick. John seemed to keep well. He had received a badge for good conduct which he wore on his sleeve. In about a year they were engaged in their first battle, and his name was among the ones who had given their life for this country. Ha died in 1894 in March in Tamasi Eastern Soudan Egypt."
