Biography

Nellie Westby, 94, of Clearbrook, died Wednesday, January 28, 1998, at the Clearwater County Memorial Hospital in Bagley.

She was born November 13, 1903, at McIntosh, the sixth child of Nels and Berget (Moi) Swanson. She attended school at McIntosh and graduated from high school. She taught in Polk, Beltrami and Clearwater Counties. She believed in the value of education and it remained a priority throughout her life.

Nellie married Adolph Westby on June 6, 1935, at Audubon, Minnesota. They made their home in Clover and Sinclair townships of Clearwater County except for a 4 1/2 year period when they worked in the defense plants in California.

Nellie and Adolph shared a love of music. In their retirement years they entertained at many area social events, Adolph playing the violin and Nellie accompanying him on the piano. Adolph passed away in 1994. In 1997, after a brief illness she moved to a board and care home in Bagley.

Survivors include a brother, Arthur Swanson of McIntosh; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and five brothers.

Funeral services were Saturday, January 31, 1998, at the Faith Bible Chapel of Clover, rural Leonard, with Rev. James Tillberry officiating. Interment was at the Clover Cemetery, rural Leonard, with arrangements by the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley.
