Biography

This profile is part of the Swartwout Name Study.

Ira was born in 1844 in Pennsylvania, the son of Joshua Swarthout and Elizabeth VanLoon.

Height: 5' 5-1/2"
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Blue
Complexion: Fair

During the Civil War, Ira served as a Private in the Illinois Volunteers, U.S. Army. He was assigned to Company G of the 15th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. He enlisted and was mustered in on 4 March 1865 at Dixon, Illinois. He mustered out on 16 September 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

In 1866, he married Anna B. Winbault (1846-1924) who had been born in Ohio in 1846, the daughter of Edward B. Winbault and Melissa Fero. Ira and Annie had four children:

1) William J. Swarthout (1869-?) - born in Illinois
2) Robert Gale Swarthout (1871-1941) - born in Missouri
3) Edward Roy Swarthout (1873 - 1936) - born in Kansas
4) May Swarthout (1875-?) - born in Kansas
NOTE - The Frank L. Swarthout that another researcher has linked as Ira's son does not appear in any of the records found so far for Ira. Can anyone clarify?

1870 - La Plata, Macon County, Missouri (Oddly, both of his parents were listed in the U.S. Census as living at this time with both Ira's family as well as his sister Malvina Christie's family.)
1875 - Newbern Township (near Abilene), Dickinson County, Kansas
1880 - Newbern Township, Dickinson County, Kansas
1900 - Kansas City Ward 14, Jackson County, Missouri
1904 - Washington Township, Buchanan County, Missouri
1910 - Washington Township, Buchanan County, Missouri (next door to son Robert and his family)

Son Robert was a carpenter and his father's business partner.

Annie died on 22 August 1924 at age 77 and was buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Saint Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri, USA. Two months later, on 07 October 1924, Ira was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Veterans in Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas. He was discharged on 19 February 1925 and went to live with his son Robert in St. Joseph, Missouri. Ira died a month later at age 80 and was buried next to his wife.
