Biography

Private James Sweet served in the Upper Canada militia in the War of 1812
Service started: 1812
Unit(s): Addington Militia; Incorporated Militia
Service ended: 1814

James was born in 1792 in Ernestown, Ontario.[1] He married a woman named Mary, probably just before the War of 1812. During the war, James was a private in the Addington Militia and later joined the Incorporated Militia.[2] During the war he is listed as having no children, so all his children must have been born after 1814.

James's later life and death are unknown, but there are a few clues: Oct 1 1850 a James Sweet buys 50 acres NE 1/4 of Lot 7, Con 2 in Camden Twp from Robert Latimer as well as W1/2 of SW1/4 of Lot 8 Con 2 from Salem Givens.[3] This is reflected in the 1851 agricultural census.[4][5][6] He sells both lots to William Russell in 1856.

James does not appear on the personal census of 1851/2 but it cannot be assumed that he has died by then since the census for L&A county for that decade is incomplete. However it does seem likely that he has died or left the L&A area by the 1860 census.

It is possible that James followed the family of Stephen Sweet to the North Gwillimbury area.

Hello, Edwin! You any my wife are 3rd cousins once removed. Your common ancestors are Thomas Dudley Fox and Mary Elizabeth (Sweet) Fox.

All of the little information I have about James Sweet and his daughter Mary are captured in this profile and in hers. The name of James's wife (Mary's mother) appears also to have been Mary (not Nancy).

Nancy Thompson was the wife of Stephen Sweet, not James. James' wife was named Mary, as per his War of 1812 militia records. Her maiden name is currently unknown.

James Sweet was in fact George's father. He was born abt 1792 and married Nancy Thompson, born 1790 as far as I know. My name is John Jarvis and I am descended from Philip John Sweet b.1 Jan 1861 (m. Ambrogina Soles).
