Biography

Charles Swegles was born on 6 Mar 1864 in Buffalo, Erie, New York, United States, son of Charles Swegles (~1834 - 1932) and Elizabeth (Higgins) Swegles (~1841 - 1917).^[1]. He was baptized on 13 Sep 1864 with the name of Carolum Gulielmum Swagles ^[1].

In 1881, he was listed in the Cincinnati City Directory: "Swegles Chas W. clk. 230 Main, h. 494 Fulton Av." He was living with his mother and brother James.^[2]

In August 1897: "COVINGTON MAN'S CAPER. Charles Swegles, a Covington street car man, was locked up at Central Station last night on the charge of drunkenness. He had been creating a disturbance on Ninth and Elm streets while under the influence and threatened to clean out several saloons."^[3]

In January 1898, Charles was the owner of a horse named Loyalty (formerly owned by his brother John) that was racing at the Crescent City Jockey Club in New Orleans.^[4]

In 1903, Charles endorsed a medical procedure:

The Electro-Chemic Institute: Dear Doctors- I have been treated for the last fifteen of sixteen years for Catarrh of the stomach. I never obtained more than a slight temporary relief. I have taken your treatment only thirty days, and can now say that I am a well man. Yours sincerely, CHARLES W. SWEGLES.^[5]

In April 1904, Charles and his mother sued the Covington and Cincinnati Elevated Railway and Transfer Company, he for $5,250. They has been driving over the bridge on 29 October 1903, on their way home from Cincinnati, when "an engine passed under the driveway, frightening their horse. The animal ran away, overturning the buggy." Charles claimed that he had "sustained severe injuries about the head and many bruises on the body." He asked for $5,000 for injuries and $250 to repair his buggy.^[6]

The judge ruled against the pair.^[7]

Charles died on 24 Jun 1932 in Kenton, Kentucky aged 68. He is buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Kenton County, Kentucky, USA.^[8][9]

In the 1865 census Charles (age 1) was the son of Charles Sweegles in District 02, Ward 08, Buffalo, Erie, New York, United States.^[10]

In the 1870 census Charles (age 6) was in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, United States.^[11]

In the 1875 census Charles (age 11) was in Buffalo, Erie, New York, United States.^[12]

In the 1880 census Charles (age 16) was the single son of Eliza Swegals in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, United States.^[13]
