Biography

Joanna Swift was born in 1722 the child of Joseph Swift and Mercy Blackwell. She married Thomas Glover on 10 Feb 1744. Their marriage is listed both in CT town records and in Massachusetts town records. Were they married in Lebanon or her hometown of Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts? She died on December 22, 1800, in Conway, Massachusetts, at the age of 78.

Research Notes

According to Colonial Families of America Vol VIII, a Joanna Swift of Sandwich with the same birth and death dates married Thomas Glover on 18 February 1743 in Lebanon, Connecticut. Her parents were Thomas and Joanna Swift. [1] More research is needed to resolve this difference.

Marriages were often recorded in two locations when the couple resided immediately in a location different than the marriage location. Thus we can speculate she was married in Sandwich but immediately moved to Thomas's home town of Lebanon and had the marriage recorded there as well. As for her parentage, there is no record of the birth of a Joanna(h) Swift to either Joseph or Thomas in the Sandwich records. Births of a Joannah to both a Josiah (5 Jul 1722 mother Experience) and Samuel (7 Apr 1725 mother Ruth) are recorded in Sandwich. Joanna is listed as a child of Joseph and Mercy in the Mayflower Births and Deaths collection but without a birth date.
