Biography

Estella Mary Swinburne is born in 1873 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter or Robert Swinburne and Mary Monahan.

According to a 2001 letter to Michelle Cascio from Warren Fandrey accompanying his family histories, Esther Swinburne, his mother's mother, was placed in an orphanage in 1878 and did not know anything about her parents.

In the 1875 state census of New York, taken 26 June 1875 in Kings County, Robert Swinbern, a 29 year old Sea Man, born in England and a naturalized citizen of the US, lives with his wife, Mary, 27, born in Massachusetts ("Mass"), and their daughters Anne, 4 (b. 1871), and Hestor, 2 (b. 1873), both born in Kings County. Their home is worth $800. [1]

In the 1880 census, "Hester Swinebarn," age four (b. 1876), and a girl who is presumably her sister, Mary, age 8 (b. 1872), both live in a convent in Babylon, on Long Island. The girls were both born in New York.[2]

Esthella Mary Swinburne marries Emil Bonin on 18 November 1899 in Brooklyn. She is 22 years old (b. 1877) and was born in Brooklyn to Robert and Maria. Her mother's surname is not recorded. Estella lives at 1214 Bushwick Av, in Brooklyn.[3]

According to the 1910 census, Esther and Emil have five children, three of whom are surviving in 1910: Catherine (1897), Eva Maria (1900), Selena (1903), and Emma (c. 1906).

Catherine, born in 1897, dies in Brooklyn at age 20.[4]

Eva Maria dies in infancy on 18 October 1900, in Maspeth, Queens, New York.[5]

Selena is born 18 December 1903 in Brooklyn, New York.[6] In one record of her birth, Selena is called "Estella Bornie," daughter of Estella Swinbuin, age 26 (b. 1877), born in Brooklyn, NY, and her husband "Emil Bornie," on 18 December 1903 in Brooklyn. Emil, born in Europe, is 27 (b. 1876).[7]

In the 1905 census of Brooklyn, taken 1 June, Amil Bonin, age 29, a carpenter from Germany, appears in the census with his wife, Stella, age 29, a housewife, and their daughters Catherina, 7, and Selina, 2, both in school. This record indicates that all four are citizens of the US. Amil has been in the US for 20 years (since 1885).[8]

The 1910 census taken in Kings County (Brooklyn) on 23 April includes the family of Emil Bonin, age 34. According to this census, he immigrated in 1884 and is still an alien resident. He works as a carpenter/framer. The family can all speak English. Also living with him are his wife, Stella, age 35. They have been married for thirteen years. They have had five children, of whom three are now living. The children in the census with them are Catherine, age 12, Selena, age 6[9], and Emma, age 4. Also living with them is a nephew, Charles, age 12. Charles was born in New York of a German father and a mother who is native to New York.[10]

Emma's married name is Basso.[11]

Selena marries Edward Bernard Fandrey, a trucker, trooper, and hot dog entrepreneur, on 1 September 1922 in Smithtown, New York.[6]
