Biography

Jonathan Tabor was born in Appalachia, in North Carolina.

Jonathan was born before 1850. He was the son of Nathan Tabor and Elizabeth Condra. He passed away in 1863.

In his manuscript, "Some Tabors," George Leroy Tabor wrote the following about his uncle, Jonathan:

"Jonathan, the fourth son and eighth child, born July 20, 1831, was a brilliant young man, the choice of the family and the favorite of the community. When the Civil War broke out, he and all of his brothers, with the possible exception of John C. volunteered to defend the South. In the Battle of Boher's* Creek, Mississippi, Jonathan was wounded in the lower leg. Gangrene and amputation followed. Still the poison spread. One night he called to his brother.

"There must be water in this bed."

Thomas rushed to the bed only to find that the dressing had sloughed from the infected leg. The bed was drenched with a soldier's blood. A hero's soul was taking its flight.

Two other uncles of mine were slain in that horrible struggle. All died not in vain. Their blood flowed freely for rights guaranteed by the National Constitution and confirmed by decisions of the Supreme Court. Such deeds of heroism will be forever cherished wherever men love liberty and distribution of power. The manner in which the South was overcome can be justified only upon the assumption that, 'Might is right.' -- GLT.

My uncle Hank added the * by Boher's Creek and noted: "This is apparently a misreading of "Baker's Creek" when the ms. was typed from GLT's longhand. Baker's Creek was the Confederate name for what the Yankees who won it, called the Battle of Champion's Hill.

I Tabor (Hoff) Fisher would like to add that I find my Great-Grandfather's political views distressing. His genealogical research is also, at times, suspect. GLT did have at least two uncles who fought in (and survived) the Civil War Nathan Thompson Tabor Jr and (mentioned in the story) Thomas Washington Tabor. He claims here that there were at least 8 children and that two more sons died in the war. Currently there are only 6 children listed -- and Jonathan was not listed until I found these notes. It may be that the three who died were not entered, as later generations may have been unaware of those who died young and without children. While GLT's work is uneven, I felt that the information in this story, since it was about more recent history, and because it could be confirmed by FindAGrave[1] and by The Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia,[2] could be safely included. Any information about the missing two uncles would be appreciated.
