Biography

William was born about 1594 in Fremington, Devon, the son of William Tanner alias Mortimer and Elinor his wife.^[1]

William was mentioned in the will of his father in 1614 (or 1614/5),^[1] and died sometime after this date. He was not mentioned in the will of his mother Ellen in 1635.^[2]

Research Notes

The order of birth of William and his siblings Matthew and James is unknown. In the will of his father William in 1614 (or 1614/5), William was mentioned immediately before Matthew and James, perhaps suggesting he was his eldest surviving son. As William, Matthew and James were mentioned together in the will, they might all have been above a certain age at the time, perhaps either 18 or 21 (the age of majority).
