Joseph was the first born child of James and Celah Tatham, born in Darwen, Lancashire in 1870.[1] He was baptised on 10 May 1871[2]
In 1881,[3] Joseph is a 10 year old scholar living at 499 Bolton Road, Blackburn which was, undoubtedly, a full house. His grandparents and their unmarried adult son and daughter lived there along with another adult daughter (Joseph's mother), her husband and their five children.
