“Few have run so long a race and fewer still fulfilled so well their duties.” - - The Political Arena, Fredericksburg, Virginia February 3, 1835 (extract from obituary notice for Mrs Ann Corbin Tayloe Lomax)

Ann was born in 1753 at her parents home in Richmond County, Virginia, Mount Airy. When she was 20, also at Mount Airy, she married Thomas Lunsford Lomax of Port Tobacco, north along the Rappahannock River from Mount Airy. Ann was named for her great grandmother, Ann Corbin Tayloe. This younger Ann and her sisters married men who had established family estates/seats, many of them First Families of Virginia. The dowry’s for each daughter were substantial - 2000 pounds sterling.

The exception was her older sister Rebecca’s dowry. Rebecca’s husband, Frank Lee, was from the Lee’s of Stratford Hall, but Frank as a younger son did not have a nearby established estate/seat. The solution to provide for his daughter and keep her close: Rebecca’s father John Tayloe II provided a dowry of land near his Mount Airy estate, and built a home there - Menokin - conveyed via deed of gift.

When Rebecca Lee died in 1797, she left Menokin to Ann. One of Ann’s sons, John Tayloe Lomax, eventually lived at Menokin.

Interestingly, Ann and her husband Thomas named four of their five sons in honor of Ann’s brother/brothers in laws: John Tayloe Lomax, Ralph Wormeley Lomax, Mann Page Lomax and Edward Lloyd Lomax.

Ann’s younger sister, Mary Tayloe Page (Mrs Mann Page III) died in January 1835 - Ann died just a few hours later - they had been the last remaining children of John and Rebecca Tayloe.
