Biography

Elmyria (aka "Elmira") Taylor was born in 1850 in Morgan County, Tennessee, USA. Her parents were:

Father: Samuel James Taylor, b: 1820 in VA
Mother: Alecia (Snow) Taylor, b: 1823 in TN

Shortly after "Elmira" Taylor's birth, her family joined other Morgan County farmers who left Tennessee, moving west to Arkansas in 1850, seeking better and cheaper farm land. Her mother (Alceia "Racey-Leacy" Snow)'s family joined them on this westward trek. They settled in rural Newton County in the Arkansas Ozark mountains. There, they lived through the horrors of the US Civil War, mostly Union sympathizers, but above-all determined to keep their families together and survive.

Shortly after the war's end, on June 5, 1866, at just 16 years old, Elmira Taylor married her cousin, Samuel-James "Jimmy" Snow (son of her mother's brother). He was only 18. They married in Madison, Newton Co., Arkansas. Samuel James and Elmira Mary (Taylor) Snow bought a farm in Jasper, Newton Co., Arkansas (enlarged to 420 acres by 1880) to raise their family. They had 5 children:[1]

  1. Amanda "Mandy" Snow b: 25 Apr 1867 in Jasper, Newton, AR
  2. William Elisha Snow b: 15 May 1869 in Jasper, Newton, AR
  3. Henry Harrison Snow b: Mar 1875 in Newton, Newton, AR
  4. Aaron James Snow b: 18 Feb 1878 in Jasper, Newton, AR
  5. Elizabeth "Lizzie/Missy" Snow b: 1880 in Jasper, Newton, AR

The 1880 Census listed them:[2]

The winter after the 1880 Census was taken, between Christmas and January 1881, Samuel James Snow caught ill and passed away at his farm in Jasper, Newton, Arkansas. He was only 33 years old. His wife, Elmira Mary (Taylor) Snow, survived him. She died in 1922 in Redden, Atoka Co., Oklahoma. Samuel James Snow is buried at the Jasper Cemetery, Jasper, Newton County, Arkansas.[3] Elmyira Mary (Taylor) Snow is buried at the Redden Cemetery, Redden, Atoka County, Oklahoma, USA. [4]
