Biography

Hannah Taylor was born in October of 1777 in Tyron County, North Carolina, to Joshua Taylor. She was mentioned in the 1827 will of her father.[1]

About 1803, she married George Dickey, and they made their home in Rutherford County, North Carolina, until 1820, when they moved west to what was then Haywood County, North Carolina, but was later Macon County.[2]

In November 1823, she joined Franklin Baptist Church by letter. She was dismissed on 5 April 1828 to become a charter member of Cowee Baptist Church.[3]

In 1840, the George Dickey family moved to what was then Gilmer County, Georgia, but later became Fannin County. He died there on 15 September 1842. On 12 November 1842, the heirs of George Dickey signed off that they were satisfied with the disposition of his real estate. The heirs were J. W. Henry and his wife Martha, John Russell and his wife Nancy, E. M. Hall and his wife Miriam, B. K. Dickey, George W. Dickey, Joshua T. Dickey, and John B. Dickey who was the administrator.[4]

Hannah Dickey continued to live on at the home place until her death on 25 January 1868. She is buried in the Dickey Cemetery on Hogback Mountain with her husband and a number of people they enslaved.[5]

Research Notes

Despite appearing with the middle name Steele in many online family trees, there is no evidence that she had a middle name. In all primary source documents, she appeared as simple Hannah with no middle name or middle initial.

She was the second great grandmother of author James Lafayette Dickey.

The only sources on the page both list Hannah Holland as the mother and wife of Joshua. I'm not sure if she was removed before or after our correspondence but I am getting error/warning/suggestions that I can't clear unless you have Findagrave and other sites remove their familial relationships as well. Thanks for any updates.
