Biography

Ellen Lucy Templer was born around 1837 in Australia. She was the daughter of John Arthur Templer and Rosamund Mary Darvall.

. Her parents became early European settlers at Canterbury, New Zealand.

On 21 November 1867 at Riccarton Church, Christchurch, she married Michael Scott Campbell.

They followed farming pursuits in Canterbury, successively at Longbeach station (where her husband was in partnership with her uncle, Edward Merson Templer), Mesopotamia, and Craigieburn station. They then went to live at Christchurch.

She was a keen archer, a member of the Christchurch Archery Club, which used a lawn in the Botanic Gardens. She was also one of the earliest and keenest women golfers in Christchurch, associated with the Christchurch Golf Club.

After living at Papanui, where her husband passed away in 1897, and Avonside, she went to live with her daughter Miss Rose Campbell at Kowai Bush.

She passed away on 5 March 1935 at Kowai Bush, aged 87. She was survived by 6 daughters. She was buried at the Church of England Cemetery, Papanui (St Paul's Anglican Church Cemetery), with her late husband.
