Called Aethelmaer "the great"[1] or (depending on the translation) "the stout".[2]
In 1013 the ealdorman Aethelmaer with other western thanes surrendered to king Swegen at Wallingford.[3]
His son Aethelwaerd was executed by King Cnut for treason at London in 1017.[1]
Traditional pedigrees of the house of Godwin (family of King Harold II "Godwinson") place him as the father of Wulfnoth who is in turn the father of Godwin.[4] More recently this theory has been largely discarded.[5][6]
