Biography

Called Aethelmaer "the great"^[1] or (depending on the translation) "the stout".^[2]

In 1013 the ealdorman Aethelmaer with other western thanes surrendered to king Swegen at Wallingford.^[3]

His son Aethelwaerd was executed by King Cnut for treason at London in 1017.^[1]

Research Notes

Traditional pedigrees of the house of Godwin (family of King Harold II "Godwinson") place him as the father of Wulfnoth who is in turn the father of Godwin.^[4] More recently this theory has been largely discarded.^[5][6]
