Biography
Mary Elizabeth Thomas was born to parents, Dr.William Robert Thomas and Elizabeth Dempsey. Her father was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg when she was just 9 months old. It is unlikely that William ever met his baby daughter. Mary followed along in her father footsteps by becoming a midwife in Spartanburg County, attending to many, many births over her lifetime. She was sitting in a chair on the front porch of her daughter's home, laughing, when she died from a massive heart attack. Mary Elizabeth Thomas Seay was greatly adored and loved by her family and others in her community.[1]
