Aged 8 when he was baptised on the 7th of June 1659 at St John's Micklegate, Henry Thompson was son of Sir Henry Thompson and his second wife, Jane Newton. [1] [2][3][4] Venn says that he was baptised at Kilham. [5] He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge, obtaining an MA in 1675, and at Gray's Inn. [3][5]

On the 17th of January 1672 at Escrick he married Frances Swann [6]daughter of Alderman Swann of Kingston-upon-Hull. [1] She bore him a daughter before her death in 1679. [3][1][2]

On the 4th of February 1684 at Collingham Henry married Mary Beilby,[7] daughter of John Beilby of Micklethwaite [2][8][1] and his wife, Barbara Lowther.[9] She bore him 4 sons and 2 daughters.[3]

Henry and his uncle, Edward Thompson, stood for election at York on the 10th of May 1690 against Robert Waller. Waller was returned without dispute but Henry and his uncle both had 841 votes. Henry was declared elected on the 17th.[10] Henry did not stand in 1695 and his uncle was duly elected. [10] [11]

Henry was elected Lord Mayor of York for the year 1699-1700. [3][2] He died in 1700 and was buried at Escrick on the 6th of July.[3] His will was proved on the 1st of October. [1][8] [12][2]
