JOHN THOMPSON DIES - FORMER HOWARD COUNTY MAX EXPIRES AT SOLDIERS' HOME.
Was the Son of Michael Thompson, One of the Most Prominent of County's Pioneers.
John Thompson, aged 73 years, died Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in the hospital of the Soldiers' Home, Marion, where, his condition demanded that he be taken from his late Home, West Ninth street, that city. Mr. Thompson was a victim of heart trouble and dropsy. For the last six weeks he has been unable to recognize any relative visiting his bedside. He was very bad for several weeks before that time, being unable to lie down. He has been in failing health for several months.
The funeral of Mr. Thompson will be held from the late home in Marion, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. He will be laid to rest at the side of his first wife, the mother of his children, eight of whom survive him. as does the last wife, whom he married two years ago [sic: 1916].
The surviving children are: Lomax Thompson of New Castle, Mrs. J. F. Brown [sic: James T. Bowen] of near this city, Walter Thompson of this city, Mrs. Lewis [sic: Earl T.] Kenworthy of New London, John Thompson of Indianapolis, Charles Thompson of Marion, Mrs. Sadie Gwin [sic: Sarah Zinn] of Pettysville, Ind., and Mrs. Effie Ritty [sic: Rippey] of Ranger, Texas.
Mr. Thompson was reared under Christian influences and ended his days in the serene consolation of the Christian hope. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and earnestly espoused the principles of that organization.
The deceased spent many years in Howard county and was a son of the notable pioneer Michael Thompson, prominent in the political life of the county in the early days and a forceful personality.
The deceased was a man of slendid personality, and held in high esteem by all who knew him in his period of residence in this community. He was a valiant and honorable soldier in the war between the states and justified the high regard of his comrades in that conflict.
As a citizen and man devoted to his family only the highest commendation can be given him.
