West was born in 1870, his birth being registered at Gravesend, Kent in the 2nd quarter of that year[1]. He was the son of James Thorrold and Rosetta Shotter.
He was baptised on 19 October 1870 at Milton Next Gravesend, Christchurch, Kent, England[2]. His father was a Ship Broker of Old Kent Road.

West and his family emigrated from England to the Colony of Natal in June 1872. He was educated in Ladysmith.
At the age of 25 he married 21 year old Isabella Kate MacPhail on 3 June 1896 at Mr. D. MacPhail's farm in Dundee, Colony of Natal, after Banns[3]. West was an Auctioneer of Dundee; Isabella was a Farmer's Daughter, also of Dundee. The witnesses were Ernest Thorrold, James Thorrold, [MacPhail-175[|Annie MacPhail]] and Dugald MacPhail.
They went on to have 7 children, one of whom died young.
He served in the Second Boer War (1899-1902) as Secretary with the Dundee Rifle Association. West was entitled to the South Africa Medal with Clasp.
He was a Justice of the Peace and Mayor of Dundee, Natal. He lived at Bellevue, 95 Smith Street, Dundee with his family.
In 1928 West and his wife Isabella travelled to the United Kingdom, arriving on 1 June 1928 into London on the ship Borodine. They returned to South Africa, travelling on the ship Ballarat, departing from England on 18 October 1928 bound for Capetown[4].
His father James passed away at his home in Ladysmith on 30 April 1929 just 4 days after his 90th birthday. His mother Rosetta died the following year at her home, on 16 August 1930.
West passed away in 1932 at the age of 62 due to Myocarditis with Angina and Cardiac Failure[5]. He was buried at Talana Military Cemetery, Dundee, uMzinyathi District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa[6][7].
