Biography

Note: DEATH: Pearl Gertrude Johnson, the daughter of William and Ella (DeVries) Tjaden, was born June 11,1918 in rural Beulah, North Dakota, the youngest of ten children. She was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church. She grew up in the rural area around Beulah, was educated and graduated from Center, ND. Pearl married Harold L. Johnson on February 17, 1935, in Hazen, North Dakota. In 1944, Harold was killed in Germany in WWII. After Harold’s death Pearl remained in the Peterson area where she worked various jobs. On November 29, 1975, Pearl married Alvin Johnson in Petersen, IA. Following their marriage they remained in the Peterson area where they farmed. After Alvin’s death in 1980, she moved to Linn Grove, IA. Pearl was a friend of the Methodist Church in Peterson, a member of the America Legion Auxiliary and was active in her early years. Pearl would always say in her own words, “My hobbies in life were to help anyone who needed it and to keep the peace when needed.” Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” Pearl passed away at the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry, Iowa, on December 28, 2002, at the age of 84. . She was part of the “Greatest Generation.” She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; three sisters: Mary McGrath, Tena Fetch and Alice Pascua; six brothers: Fred, Kobes, Albert, Louis Carl and Walter. She is survived by her two daughters: Marlene Joan Pieper and her husband Melvin, of Manson, IA and Ellen Charlotte James and her husband Ray of Dallas Center, IA; on son, Vernon Johnson of Linn Grove, IA; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and many friends.
