Biography

Moses Tomerlin was born abt. 1807 in North Carolina. He moved, presumably with his family, to Tennessee. His younger sister was born abt. 1813 in North Carolina, and his father died abt. 1830 in Tennessee, so the move probably occurred between 1813 and 1830. He first appears on census records in 1840 in Tennessee.

He married Prudence Gilbert, and had at least five children with her. They were in Giles County in 1840, and moved to Lawrence County by 1850. Prudence died between 1850 and 1860, so it's unclear if she is the mother of Martha, Nancy Angeline, and Milton Green. Because there is a large gap between children, from 1846-1855, I'm assuming Prudence died between 1850 and 1855, and the children born between 1855 and 1859 were of another mother.

In the 1860 census, two new women appear in the household. One is Nancy Pope, age 50, listed last, which is usually where we see boarders, in-laws, siblings, and hired help. The other is Jane Tomerlin, age 38. The assumption that Nancy Pope is Janes's mother can only be correct if there was an error in the age calculations by the census taker (or if Nancy was age 12 when she gave birth to Jane - not impossible, but certainly unlikely). Jane and Moses probably had four children together. Jane's death is unknown, but it was between 1860 and 1880.

In 1880, Moses' wife is Mariah, b. 1812, and they have one more son, James, b. 1865. Because Mariah would have been 53 in 1865, I'm assuming James' mother was Jane Pope, described above.

A Moses Tomlin/Timberlin served in the Civil War, 27th regiment, Georgia Infantry. It doesn't seem likely that this is the same person.
