Edward Tomlin was born on the 31st January, 1850 at Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England, United Kingdom. He was the son of Daniel Tomlin and Eliza (Kilby/Kilbey) Tomlin.
First Marriage
Edward Tomlin's 1st Marriage was to Sarah (Rhodes) Tomlin (1851-1872) at the Parish Church at Boxmoor, Hertfordshire, UK on 13 February 1870. (Rhodes - sometimes Rhoades or Roads. Marriage Certificate)id=BMD%2FM%2F1870%2F1%2FAZ%2F000181%2F286)</ref>
They had a daughter Ellen born 16 April 1871 (dob in school records), A second daughter was born in the third quarter of 1872 but mother and baby (named Anna or Annie) both died in childbirth or soon after.
2nd Marriage
Edward Tomlin married Clara Simmons in the Jul-Aug-Sep Quarter of 1876 at Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England, United Kingdom. [1]
In the 1881 census, Edward, Clara and Ellen (now 10) were living in Cowper Road, Hemel Hempstead. Clara died in tragic circumstances on 2 March 1887. Her death was reported in the Bucks Herald on 12 March 1887. It reported that she had died by cutting her throat with a razor. She was found by Daniel when he returned from work. She had been ailing for many years and she indicated before dying that the wound was self inflicted. The inquest was held at the Three Backbirds in St Johns Road, Boxmoor the day after her death and found that she died of injuries inflicted by herself whilst temporarily of unsound mind.
Third Marriage
Edward Tomlin married Mary Ann Pipkin on 4 October, 1888 at the Parish Church, Boxmoor. According the the marriage certificate issued by BMD "England & Wales Marriages, 1837-2005," Edward Tomlin, 38, Bachelor, ropemaker, of Boxmoor married Mary Ann Pipkin, 27, spinster, servant of Boxmoor. It was confusing that his marital condition was described as bachelor, however, the Boxmoor Parish record of marriage has Bachelor crossed through and Widower inserted and ropemaker changed to labourer. Presumably the record was rectified some time after it had been registered at BMD.
Six children were born from this marriage:
Death Edward's wife, Mary, died in 1912 aged 52. She was cremated at Heath Lane cemetery – buried 13 April 1912. Grave reference NC/47 (deceasedonline). It was difficult to find when Edward died. He was living at 9 Puller Road in 1901 census, Still there in 1911 and 1921. Then I found that the Electoral Roll registers have him at 9 Puller Road unti Autumn 1923. In deceasedonline there is a William Edward Tomlin of 9 Puller Road buried at Heath Lane Cemetery on 17 September 1923 – and BMD has person of that name aged 71 in the death register for the September quarter of 1923. In all others documents and records that I found he is simply Edward Tomlin. Edward's son William Edward was known as Ted so maybe the informant for Edward's death thought that Edward was also officially William Edward.
