Biography

James Townsend was born in Appalachia, in North Carolina.

James Pinkney Townsend was born on 8 April 1890 in Hickory Township, Catawba County, North Carolina, the son of Abel Leander Townsend and Alice Susan Huffman.[1]

Able L Townsend (32), farmer, born May 1868, and his wife, Alice S (29), owned mortgage free farm property, married 12 years. Alice reported she had 5 children, all living, in household with Dora A L (11), born January 1889, James P (10), bron April 1890, Leander C (7), born September 1892, Laura M (6), born November 1893, and Therby E (1), born July 1898. Dora, James, Leander, and Laura attended school 4 months within the census year. Able, Alice, Dora, and James were able to read, write, and speak English and all in household were born in North Carolina.[2]

James Townson (19), married Lona James (16), on 19 July 1908 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina.[3]

James P Townsend (20), furniture company laborer, and his wife, Lola (17), owned mortgaged property on Highland Avenue, married 1 year, with one child, in household with daughter, Nora, 7 months old. James and Lola were able to read, write, and speak English and all in household were born in North Carolina.[4]

James Pinkney Townsend (27), registered for the World War I draft on 5 June 1917 in Caldwell County, North Carolina, described as tall. slender, with dark gray eyes and dark brown hair.[5]

James Townsend (40), widowed, chair factory laborer, owned property at 205 Mantlier Street, valued at $4500, equipped with a radio set, in household with his children, Nora (18), cotton mill bookkeeper, Frank (17), and Ned (13). Frank and Ned attended school within the census year. All in household were able to read, write, and speak English and all were born in North Carolina.[6]

James Pinkney Townsend (41), married Willie Alta Hendrix (21), on 31 October 1931 in Davidson, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.[7][8][9][10]

James Sr completed 7th grade and Willie completed 4 years high school. James Sr, Willie, and James Jr were located in Thomasville, North Carolina in 1935 and all in household were born in North Carolina.[11]

James Pinkney Townsend died 10 May 1942 in Advance, Davie County, North Carolina and was buried at Thomasville City Cemetery, Thomasville, Davidson County, North Carolina.[12]

Unable to locate the 1920 census for the Townsend family. Unable to locate death certificate, last name spelled phonetically on headstone, perhaps misspelled on death certificate also.
