George Townsend was the son of Edward Townsend and Violet Lanauze.
He worked as a Painter in Christchurch.
In February 1941 George married Edna Palmer. They lived at 366 Worcester Street, Christchurch.
The following month his name was drawn in the 2nd Ballot for overseas service.
George enlisted WWII April-June 1941, Army no 18038, rank Private with the Infantry Reinforcements, 2nd NZEF.
George became a Prisoner of War on 13 December 1941 and was held at PG 57, Gruppignano, Udine, Italy and Dulag VIII-A, Gorlitz, Germany. 1 He was reported as missing in Christchurch newspapers.
George Townsend died age 67 in 1978. [1]
