John was born at sea during the voyage to Australia of his family on board the "Thetis" in March 1848. He was the son of Michael Treanor and Margaret Gibson. Upon the arrival of the Treanor family in Sydney, they have shortly thereafter travelled to Wollongong where his parents, Charles and Margaret, would establish their first school in Australia, St Francis of Xavier. John was a sickly child and would pass away later that year on 31 December1848. [1]
The Old Wollongong Catholic Cemetery was formerly located at the South Eastern end of Crown Street Wollongong, until c.1970s when the graveyard was converted to the "Andrew Lysaght Park", Wollongong near South Beach.
In December 1998, the Foreshore Plaza was opened, formerly part of the old Catholic Cemetery the remaining headstones have been placed into a wall.
According to the dates at NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages, the earliest recorded burials at the "Old R/C Wollongong Cemetery" were recorded in 1805. Burials continued until the last recorded burial being Ellen Lysaght 2/5/1914.
The State Government has introduced legislation in Parliament to allow a development to proceed on the old Roman Catholic Cemetery site, next to the Wollongong Entertainment Centre. The Wollongong Amendment Bill effectively added the land to an area managed by the Wollongong Sports Ground Trust. The land was used to build piers for a new grandstand at WIN Stadium and to expand a restaurant in the entertainment centre.
At the time it is unlikely any human remains will be disturbed. The volume includes details of burials from 1805 to 1914, in the Catholic Cemetery, and is a copy from four foolscap pages of names from the Official Register. It includes details concerning the name of person interred, abode, when buried, age, birthplace, profession and by whom burial ceremony was performed. Some headstones have survived but unfortunately many have been lost or did not exist. John is included in the memorial wall. [2]
