Jane was born on October 1st 1764.[1][2] She was baptised at St Stephen in Brannel on 5 Nov 1764.[3]
She married Thomas Trethewey on 4 October 1785 in Roche. On the marriage records she was recorded as being of the Parish of St Stephens and he as a sojourner in the Parish of Roche. Both signed the register with their names, and the wedding was witnessed by a Richard Trethewey and a John Trethewey. [4]
Jane and Thomas settled in Roche,[1] where the couple lived at Tresayes, on the South-western side of the village.[5] She was instrumental in the development of Methodism in that area, offering her house for the preaching of the Gospel, and setting up the first Methodist Chapel in Roche Parish. 'The Story of the Parish of Roche' describes it as 'a very small and simple building having a thatched roof', but that it 'proved itself to be "none other than the house of God"'. [6] So important was her influence that three years after her death, The Methodist Magazine of December 1849 published a four page 'Memoir' of her life of faith and service. [1]
