Biography

Angelica Troutman ... [1]

Note: 'In 1732 Alexander Shafer, who was born in 1711, emigrated from the Palatinate, Germany, to America, and settled in Lancaster County, Pa., where he ultimately became the owner of 1800 acres of land. He founded Shaferstown, Lebanon County, Pa. in 1745. His only son, John Shafer, was a successful and prominent farmer in that section and was the father of five children. Two of them, John, Jr., and his sister, removed to Washington County, MD., and settled along Antietam Creek, six miles from Hagerstown. John was a farmer and miller. He built a mill long known as "Roxbury Mill." By close attentionto duty, and through economical management, John Shafer acquired a handsome competency, which gave him sustenance to the ripe old age of 97, when he passed away, as peacefully and calmly as one who wraps the cover of the couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams.
John Shafer was an upright and honest man. He married Miss Miller, of Shaferstown, Lebanon Co., Pa., by whom he had five children. John, the eldest of these, married Miss Hess, who died a few years after marriage, leaving a daughter, named Elizabeth. John Shafer was again married, to Angelica Troutman, by whom he had six children: Jonathan, Catharine, Samuel, John, Mary, and Daniel. [...] John Shafer was a member of the Reformed Church, to which his wife also belonged. They were buried in a graveyard at Funkstown.
Jonathan Shafer, the eldest son of John and Angelica (Troutman) Shafer, was born April 14, 1794. He obtained a common school education, and in early manhood embarked in the tannery business in Boonsboro, which he carried on for many years with good success. He was married in 1820 to Susan Ringer, of "Ringer's Manor," near Boonsboro, by whom he had three children, Robert J., Margaret C., and John C. Margaret C. married Daniel Grove, and lived in Sharpsburg, where Mr. Grove died, leaving children, John, deceased, Susan, Marian, Edward, Emma, Philip, Robert.'
