Biography

of Hanover, Virginia

1820 census, Hanover Virginia, for William Trueheart shows 1 free white male 45 and over, which would put his birth date at 1775 or before.

The same census shows 40 slaves living on his property.

He commanded the 74th Regiment, Viriginia Militia as well as the 1st Regiment.

A pdf write-up exists that includes details about his grandfather (born in England) and father plus descendants. If found, please attach pdf to this profile.

William was born in 1771, apparently at Liberty Hall, originally built by the Meredith family, in Hanover, Virginia. He married Mary Elizabeth Thilman around 1790, and they had one son: Daniel Trueheart (1793–1861)

After Mary died in 1799, he married Elizabeth Taylor Sydnor (daughter of William Sydnor and Sarah Garland, probably related to William's mother, but unclear exactly how). They had 10 children:

● Mary Garland Truehart (1800–1834) ● Elizabeth Thilman Trueheart (1800–1874) ● William Sydnor Trueheart (1802–1863) ● Peter Garland Trueheart (1804–?) ● Jervis S Trueheart (1808–?) ● Amanda M "Mandy" Trueheart (1809–1837) ● Sarah Anne Trueheart (1809–?) ● Rebecca Lewis Trueheart (1811–1893) ● David Porter Trueheart (1815–1829) ● Susan Terrill Trueheart (1816–1873)

William was a Lieutenant Colonel (and presumably later a Colonel) during the War of 1812, commanding the 1st Regiment (Trueheart's) Virginia Militia. Like his father and grandfather, he was also an owner of enslaved people, with 40 enslaved people, including 10 people under age 14, listed under his name on the 1820 census.

Elizabeth died on February 8, 1816. In 1821, William remarried, this time to Nancy Ann Mosby Sheppard.

William died on February 1, 1839, age 68.

Is there any probate records or wills to say what the fate of his 40 inslaved.

There are many Back and Biracial Trueheart families in the King William area.
