Biography

parents: Alida, "Lila," (Hanson) and Glenn E. Truscott

U.S. Navy, where he served as an aviation machinist mate and attained the rank of chief petty officer. During World War II, Glenn was on the flight deck of the USS Hornet in April of 1942 during the historic launching of (then) Col. Doolittle and his group of 16 B-25s for their attack on Japan. A month and a half later, he went through the Battle of Midway. Later, during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, the USS Hornet was again under attack by Japanese dive-bombers. There the order to abandon ship came, and the USS Hornet was sunk (according to wikipedia, never sunk, but damaged in a typhoon). Picked up by a destroyer, he was reassigned to another aircraft carrier.

Your info is wrong! The Hornet (the seventh ship to carry the name) Glenn was on was sunk. He was scooped up out of the water. In the Solomon Islands campaign she was involved in the capture and defense of Guadalcanal and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands where she was irreparably damaged by enemy torpedo and dive bombers. Faced with an approaching Japanese surface force, Hornet was abandoned and later torpedoed and sunk by approaching Japanese destroyers.
