Biography

Dwight William Tryon was an American landscape painter in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work was influenced by James McNeill Whistler, and he is best known for his landscapes and seascapes painted in a tonalist style. He was the only child and son of Anson Tryon and Delia Roberts. He married Alice A. Belden in 1873. They had no children. He died of cirrhosis of the liver in Darmouth in 1925.[1]

His works can be viewed as a slideshow online at the Freer Gallery.

Research Notes

In Connecticut probate records there is a Minor Trust where Dwight W. Tryon, age 14, of East Hartford CT, is assigned to Edwin M. Roberts as guardian 9 Feb 1864. Dwight must have inherited some valuable land because his guardian sold some of to pay for his care 13 Apr 1864 for $2900.

Note that this Dwight W. Tryon does not seem to be the same person as Dwight W. Tryon, son of Abijah Tryon and Aurelia Pike of Rocky Hill, CT. They have the same name, are about the same age, live within a few miles of each other, and both are assigned guardians within 2 years of each other.
