Biography

Sager was born about 1852 and is the son of Elijah Tryon and Annie Martindale. In 1861 he is living in the household of Elizabeth Foster, a somewhat distant relative by marriage. In 1871 he is a farm servant on the farm of John Martin. In 1876 he married Charlotte Snook and they have a son, James H. who was born about 1873. In 1883, Harriet A. Tryon, and in 1886 William Nelson Tryon are born to Sager and wife Margaret Welsh. Another unnamed male child (probably Benjamin Sager Tryon) is born to them in 1887. Mary Anne Tryon is born 1889 and Nellie Helen Tryon is born 1891 and Annie Tryon in 1893. Sager died in 1895.

Research Notes

Sager is still listed in the 1895 edition of Vernon’s Guelph City Directory, 1894-1896. In 1897 his wife Margaret is remarried to Robert Abbs and the children live with them. Sager likely died around 1895. - Update; died of pneumonia, 2 Nov 1895.

The records of the children of Sager name Sager Tryon as father but we have records of five Sager Tryons. This Sager is the only one who could be the father. The others are dead, not born yet, or too young.

There is an 1891 census assigned to this Sager for a "Taigrin Trienn" with wife Maggie and daughter Harriet, 7, William, 5, Benjamin, 3, and Mary Jane, 1. Margaret was Irish and this could have been the best interpretation of what Margaret told them their names were. Place is right, Guelph, as are the names and ages of children.[1] James is not present. He is old enough to be on his own or, if his mother is still living, he could be living with her.

In the obituary for daughter Nellie Helen, it states she is survived by her mother, two brothers, and four sisters. The siblings would be William Nelson, Benjamin Sager, Mary Jane, Annie, and Harriet. Still one missing.
