Mustered out: Feb 14, 1866

Regiment(s): 16th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry

Uriah was born in Rockridge, Virginia (later West Virginia) about 1821. According to his death record, he was the son of Anthony and Jane Tuck.[1] In 1845, when he was about 24 years old, he married Mary Anderson in Gallia County, Ohio.[2] Sometime between their marriage and 1848, they relocated to Jefferson County, Indiana, where the 1850 Census enumerated Uriah (49, VA), Mary (34, VA) and daughter Mary M (2, IN). Uriah was farming and valued his real estate at $225.[3]

They returned to Gallia County before the 1860 Census (possibly upon the death of Mary's father), and in 1860 they were enumerated next to Mary's widowed mother. Uriah was farming, but the land (valued at $850) was apparently in Mary's name. Their daughter Mary was not in the home, but two other children—Edward and Ann H Johnston—were in the household.[4]

Uriah enlisted for a one-year term in the Union Army at Marietta, Ohio, on 14 February 1865 and was assigned as a Private to Company C, 16th Regiment, US Colored Infantry. He served much of his term in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was discharged there at the end of his enlistment on 14 February 1866.[5] He returned to farming and to Gallia County, where he and Mary were enumerated in Morgan Township in 1870. Uriah was age 50, born In Virginia, and owned property he valued at $2,000 plus a personal estate of $455. Mary was age 54, and there was a William Tuck, age 4 and born in Ohio, also in the home, but he could not have been Mary's biological child.[6] In October 1876, Mary was granted a divorce from Uriah in Gallia County.[7]

He passed away in Columbus, Ohio, in 1891[1] and is buried with a military marker at Green Lawn Cemetery in Franklin County, Ohio.[8]

Research Notes

  • I don't believe that Uriah and Mary had any children of their own who survived childhood. Although there were children in their household for several census years, they were not their biological children—perhaps relatives, perhaps simply taken in.
  • Not found in either Ohio or Indiana 1880 Census or 1890 Veterans Schedule, but according to his death record, he was residing in Columbus, Ohio, from 1875 on.
