Biography

Thomas Tuck the Elder, of Uffcott in the parish of Broad Hinton, Wiltshire, England, labourer, dated his will 10 October 1749, and it was proved 27 June 1750, at Marlborough, Wiltshire. Administration was given to Jacob Tuck, lawful son of the deceased. Bequests were made to: [1]

  • Son-in-law Daniel Marklyne
  • Son Thomas Tuck: £5
  • Son Philip Tuck: £5.
  • Son Stephen Tuck: £5.
  • Daughter Mary Marklyne: £5.
  • Son Jacob Tuck: my cottage or dwelling house and little garden . . . lying in Ufcott.

Thomas Tuck married Elizabeth Dash in Broad Hinton on 5 April 1697. [2] Thomas likely outlived his wife, Elizabeth, since she is not mentioned in his will.

Children of Thomas and Elizabeth (Dash) Tuck, taken from the Broad Hinton parish register. The entries for the eldest three list the parents as Thomas and Elizabeth, but the entries for the youngest three only mention the father. The entries for John, Phillip and Mary all mention Uffcott. The entry for Mary also mentions that Thomas was a labourer. [3]

  1. Thomas Tuck, baptized 13 May 1697.
  2. John Tuck, baptized 16 March 1701/2; probably died before 1749.
  3. Phillip Tuck, baptized 21 March 1703/4; buried 20 May 1783.
  4. Mary Tuck, baptized 27 February 1705/6; married Daniel Maskelyn.
  5. Jacob Tuck, baptized 14 September 1709; buried 31 March 1761.
  6. Steven Tuck, baptized 26 February 1712/3.

Research Notes

There were two Thomas Tucks baptized in Broad Hinton in the 1670s. [4]

  1. Thomas Tuck, youngest child of Richard and Dennice Tuck, baptized 13 June 1676.
  2. Thomas Tuck, son of John and Anne Tuck, baptized 1 May 1678.

They are likely the same two Thomas Tucks who were having families in Uffcott in Broad Hinton Parish in about 1700. The other Thomas Tuck had a daughter, Ruth, whose baptism record refers to her as "D[aughter] of Thomas Tuck son of Richard Tuck." That leaves the Thomas Tuck of this profile to be the son of John and Anne Tuck.
